Ansem the Wise

Ansem the Wise once called himself DiZ and covered his face with bandages to conceal his true identity. The true Ansem vigorously studied hearts and the Heartless, but soon quit on his research from fear of disrupting his world's order (he was the ruler), although his apprentice Xehanort betrayed him, robbing Ansem of all the discoveries and also his own name, becoming Ansem the Seeker of Darkness. Since then, Ansem was driven by vengeance, but when he saw Riku go so far as to give up his physical form to help Sora, he had a change of heart. Then he decided to toss aside his quest of revenge and do what needed to be done, stop Xemnas and Organization XIII before their attempts to regain their hearts would plunge the world into darkness. He cooperated with Riku in capturing Roxas and putting him inside a digital world. They replaced his memories with ones to suit the false Twilight Town in which he had been imprisoned. Eventually, the Organization located Roxas and tried to retrieve him from that world. Before they could, Ansem and Riku lured Roxas back to the pod that had Sora, in order to reunite with him. By reuniting with Sora, it finished the restoration of his memories and allowed him to wake up, after being asleep for year. According to Ansem the Wise's plan, Sora's power would be able to stop the Organization and save the World from destruction. Ansem the Wise had remained out of sight for a long time until Sora reached The World That Never Was. King Mickey met him as he was ascending the castle. From one of the ledges, he set up a special device, designed to encode Kingdom Hearts into data, and fired a beam from it at Kingdom Hearts. His hope was to download Kingdom Hearts so Xemnas could not use it. The plan backfired, and the complexity of hearts caused the machine to malfunction and explode, completely annihilating Ansem the Wise with it. The explosion basically undid all of the Organization's work at harvesting hearts, and it also changed Riku back into his normal form.
