[edit] Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

Kairi unintentionally touched Aqua's keyblade at Radiant Garden, thus incidentally making her a keyblade wielder.

[edit] Kingdom Hearts

Kairi is the friend of both Sora and Riku. They all lived together at the Destiny Islands, with Sora and Riku always competing for her attention. She is not a native to their island and cannot remember her original home. In the Ansem Reports, it is explained that Kairi originally came from Hollow Bastion and had been sent away by Ansem. In the beginning of Kingdom Hearts, Sora entered their secret cave and drew himself giving Kairi a Paupu fruit on the cave wall. Paupu fruits are said to join the hearts of any two people who share it by eating it together forever. Not long after Sora does this, a storm of darkness hits the island. Kairi is lost to the darkness. She had been kidnapped by Maleficent, who controls the darkness. Kairi is a Princess of Heart. There are seven of these Princesses, and none of them have any darkness in their heart. Maleficent was hoping to use Kairi's heart and those of the other Princesses in order to create a Keyhole to the Darkness. Sora journeyed and battled through many worlds in order to find Kairi and rescue her. When he arrived, he found her body on the floor, motionless. Kairi's heart had actually been taking refuge in Sora's body, which is why Maleficent and Ansem could not use her. Sora returned Kairi's heart to her body when he stabbed himself with Ansem's dark keyblade. It restored Kairi, but turned him into a Heartless. In spite of this, Kairi was able to awaken Sora's inner light before he was completely transformed, and he was restored. When they went to Traverse Town, Kairi gave Sora her good luck charm, with a promise to give it back one day. Sora finally defeats Ansem and seals the Door To Darkness. This restored all of the worlds, but it unfortunately separated Sora and Kairi from each other. Kairi was brought back to their home world and soon found the drawing that Sora did. Touched, she finishes the drawing by including herself giving Sora a Paupu fruit as well.

[edit] Kingdom Hearts II

In Kingdom Hearts II, a year has passed, and Kairi has forgotten Sora, due to the powers of Naminé. As Sora is about to awaken from his slumber, Kairi begins to remember. It was not long until Organization XIII sent Axel to kidnap her to use her as a hostage. Naminé freed her from her cell, and she met Riku again while trying to escape. Not long after, Riku gives her a keyblade of her own to fight against the Heartless. After they had fought them, she reunited with Sora and accompanied him as he finished off the remaining members of Organization XIII. Naminé created a portal that took her home, splitting Sora and Riku from her just before they fight Xemnas, the leader of the Organization, one last time. Sora and Riku defeated him and managed to return home. As they arrive just offshore, she calls out to them from the beach. They swim ashore, and then Sora returns her good luck charm. In the ending scene, Kairi runs up to Sora and Riku with a message in bottle from King Mickey.
