Xehanort was a pupil of Ansem the Wise. He never is known by this name in the games' current setting, however. Ansem the Wise found him, barely alive, and saved him. Xehanort became something like his adopted son. Ansem taught him everything he knew about the worlds and hearts. Eventually, Xehanort led Ansem the Wise's other scientists into betraying him and overthrowing him. They continued in doing their research that Ansem the Wise had forbidden, and Xehanort took the name of his predecessor. He even went as far as finishing the Ansem Reports in Ansem the Wise's name. The experiments with hearts caused Xehanort and his colleagues to become Heartless. Xehanort's Heartless still addressed himself as Ansem, and led the wave of darkness that consumed the world. Xehanort's Nobody took on the name Xemnas, and with the Nobodies of the other scientists, he formed Organization XIII.

Ansem, Xehanort's Heartless, was the main antagonist in Kingdom Hearts. He possessed Riku's body and became the darkness in his heart to use Riku's power. Sora defeated him and temporarily saved Riku. Riku managed to defeat him and control the darkness inside him in Kingdom Hearts: Chain Of Memories.

Xemnas, Xehanort's Nobody, was the main antagonist of Kingdom Hearts II. He led the Organization in trying to reclaim Roxas, but also in their main plot to create Kingdom Hearts and use it to become whole again. Sora and Riku defeated him and stopped him in the process.
